New Albin was built on an extensive terrace of sand and gravel adjacent to the Mississippi River. It was home to the late Harris "Shooky" Fink, who coached the town's little league and Babe Ruth teams.
Today sportspeople enjoy fishing and hunting along the banks of the Mississippi. Many deer and wild turkeys are seen throughout the area and bald eagles nest nearby. The New Albin Wildlife area and the Minnesota Hardwood Forest help to preserve much like it was before New Albin was.
